In a sold-out, 300-seat North London theater, Kevin Rodgers recently sang the parts of four villains in Jacques Offenbach’s “Tales of Hoffmann” so well that he got both bravos and boos during a curtain call.

The performance by the bass-baritone was all the more remarkable because just three months ago he was head of foreign-exchange trading at Deutsche Bank AG in London.

There’s also stage-worthy drama in the $5.3 trillion-a-day currency market. Pressure is rising on banks to reduce costs as new rules to prevent a repeat of the financial crisis, low volatility and an increase in electronic trading eats into profit margins as probes into alleged manipulation of prices widen. As a result, hundreds of traders, sales representatives and analysts have decamped to professions including opera, glass blowing and ski-equipment manufacturing in recent years.
