    Almost a Psychopath
    Do I (or Does Someone I Know) Have a Problem with Manipulation and Lack of Empathy?
    Ron Schouten, MD, JD and James Silver, JD
    Do you know someone who is too manipulative and full of himself? Does someone you know charm the masses yet lack the ability to deeply connect with those around her?

    Grandiosity and exaggerated self-worth. Pathological lying. Manipulation. Lack of remorse. Shallowness. Exploitation for financial gain. These are the qualities of Almost Psychopaths. They are not the deranged criminals or serial killers that might be coined “psychopaths” in the movies or on TV. They are spouses, coworkers, bosses, neighbors, and people in the news who exhibit many of the same behaviors as a full-blown psychopath, but with less intensity and consistency.

    In Almost a Psychopath, Ronald Schouten, MD, JD, and James Silver, JD, draw on scientific research and their own experiences to help you identify if you are an Almost Psychopath and, if so, guide you to interventions and resources to change your behavior.

    If you think you have encountered an Almost Psychopath, they offer practical tools to help you:

    • recognize the behavior, attitudes, and characteristics of the Almost Psychopath;
    • make sense of interactions you’ve had with Almost Psychopaths;
    • devise strategies for dealing with them in the present; and
    • make informed decisions about your next steps.

  2. I will admit that I can be very self absorbed and i do believe I should have what I desire if I put in the effort,thought,focus,strategy,savvy,cunning and so forth. The worst that would come out of me though, was when I was younger and more immature...especially if someone crossed me...I would hold a grudge and become vindictive...common traits of INTJ's. This is probably why I can spot a psychopath or a bully a mile away. I did learn empathy and compassion...THANK GOD! I still know people who view others as commodities or have no problem humiliating others in public...MUCH HATE FOR THIS BEHAVIOR.

  3. An interesting read...The subject has always fascinated me.

    near psychos are very skillful in hiding their manipulative behavior but leave a path of destroyed lives behind, whether in business or in their personal lives. true psychos usually end up in jail for criminal acts.

  5. Definitely makes sense...good stuff.

    Be very careful trying to diagnose someone or even mention/accuse someone! Unless you've got serious backing and understanding, odds are this will likely backfire on your own person. Also, psychopathic traits do not necessarilly mean "bad person". With good upbringing and loving surroundings, psychopaths can thrive and become productive members of society, almost with a conscience. However, bad surroundings and childhood, can really aggravate the personality on the other end of the spectrum.

    Instead of speculating about yourself or others, you can learn to deal with it:

    Unless this method really helps, odds are you're NOT dealing with a psychopath. Anyways, accusing / confronting a psychopath for being a pscyhopath directly is always a bad bet, and not really fair either, since nobody can really change their personality.

    Lack of empathy is a trait of autism / asperger's as well, which is almost the opposite of psychopathy. A pscyhopath can read social cues for manipulation, but someone with asperger/autism simply has no interest, might need much more social training, and is usually not manipulative.

    We're all individuals.

    It's a very popular notion that people with asperger is somehow more brilliant and smarter than average. While measured average IQ is higher in general, it's not a requirement and usually not advantageous. Autism is still a disability, with life-reducing risks such as lower ability to network, depression, and higher suicide rates. Many social cues and activities will seem totally pointless and wasteful even, ie. traditions and rituals. Extra social training and exposure to many different social situations will be helpful.

    Many with asperger has felt special and different all their lives without knowing why. Learning about it often helps to put all that hardship into context and find strategies to cope. If real, any kind of diagnosis is almost always good for self-help. For high-functioning people on the autism spectrum, with time and effort, they can differentiate by finding a niche or by diversification, so can become successful by their special traits for ie. finding patterns and relationships. Although effort and time is often definately required. For most, life's either a struggle, or they become somewhat recluse.

    finding a niche is the key to success in trading and up to a point in business,generally.
