  3. Building Legacy, Obama Reshapes Appellate Bench.

WASHINGTON — Democrats have reversed the partisan imbalance on the federal appeals courts that long favored conservatives, a little-noticed shift with far-reaching consequences for the law and President Obama’s legacy.

For the first time in more than a decade, judges appointed by Democratic presidents considerably outnumber judges appointed by Republican presidents. The Democrats’ advantage has only grown since late last year when they stripped Republicans of their ability to filibuster the president’s nominees.

Democratic appointees who hear cases full time now hold a majority of seats on nine of the 13 United States Courts of Appeals. When Mr. Obama took office, only one of those courts had more full-time judges nominated by a Democrat.

The shift, one of the most significant but unheralded accomplishments of the Obama era, is likely to have ramifications for how the courts decide the legality of some of the president’s most controversial actions on health care, immigration and clean air. Since today’s Congress has been a graveyard for legislative accomplishment, these judicial confirmations are likely to be among its most enduring acts.

  5. Let me see if I understand this.

We should give them drivers licenses because otherwise they might get caught and deported? Oh, that is so unfair. Of course, we don't deport them now for any reason, so they can probably relax and keep driving without insurance and with fake IDs.

(Reuters) - A U.S. Army soldier has been accused of smuggling two undocumented immigrants across the Texas-Mexico border while in uniform, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Eric Alexander Rodriguez, 20, a private in the Army, was charged with felony "bringing in and harboring certain aliens" on Friday in United States District Court Southern District of Texas, according to court records.

Rodriguez is accused of hiding two undocumented immigrants in his pickup truck on Thursday as he crossed into the United States at the Sarita, Texas, checkpoint, about 180 miles south of San Antonio.

U.S. Border Patrol agents found the immigrants hiding on the floorboard behind the front seat, covered with a bed sheet and a military jacket with Rodriguez's name tag, court records said.

Rodriguez was wearing his military uniform during the incident, the complaint said.

Prosecutors said one of the immigrants told authorities he paid $3,000 to be smuggled into the United States and Rodriguez was the driver who picked them up and transported them farther north.

Rodriguez is being held in Cameron County jail. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He is based at Fort Hood, according to the Army.
