CPU power required for discretionary trading?

    Hi, all

Would any hardware enthusiast trader care to opine on the following scenario?

An Intel Braswell-based CPU N3150 is used in a tiny computer powering three monitors, displaying up to ten 5-minute charts. No indicators are used, with only volumes and OCHL shown, on a platform with IB TWS and NinjaTrader.

Since 5-minute charts require minimal processing, and given the nature of IB's non-tick data, is it likely that the N3150 CPU will perform reasonably well, assuming that other components are high grade (eg, 8 GB RAM and quality SSD)? The computer will only be used for trading. No web browsing, etc.

    Thanks!

Most bare bones PC's are more than sufficient for retail trading. Unless you are running a high intensity HFT, stop worrying and continue to run your strategy. 5 minute timeframe is ideal for the retail trader, and does not require any high speed colo's or cpu's.

It would be pretty easy to find out if it works; test it. I doubt you will have any problems. I doubt you will find anyone here that 1) Has the exact same CPU. 2) is doing what you are doing with it.

Sounds to me you are just looking for an excuse to upgrade. You have my permission.

It will work, but underpowered / will probably lag a bit (IMO).

    * I run TWS and NinjaTrader (amongst other things) on an i5 with two monitors

Celerons are usually for web surfing machines. Usually with tons of bottlenecks that I have stopped reading up on over the years. We have another thread with a guy complaining about his i3.

Do yourself a favor and only consider i5 with 8GB-16GB. If you want to save money, get the Xeon workstations recommended by Scataphagos ( or another expert) from 2 years ago. You can get it for $200 on ebay. Architecture wise, these worksations are better made to serve your needs. Much more when NT8 is released.

  6. some time process for result output is high and it takes more CPU and RAM usage . so you must need decent ram and processor for running

I think all that soft, I mean trading soft can be run basically on every modern device now, damn even something like 10 years old will be really capable to handle it, and lof of old video cards can handle monitors, few of them at least.

For all practical purposes fine but you could have bottlenecks on traditional HDD, a cheap SSD would always be far better.
