Are there many new traders?

I haven't been around trading for very long, but I've noticed a lot of new traders in the past few months. I was just wondering if anyone noticed this, or maybe it is in my head because when I was new I wasn't experienced enough to recognized newbie traders.

If it were a zero sum game, the long run trend of a major index would be flat.

Is the long term trend of any major index flat?
