  1. You are correct. It's an either or IMO if you're going to use it as anything more than a filler kind of day which is what I'm currently doing. Trying to do this regularly and then lift heavy too...you best be young and strong. I've read trying to incorporate this at the end of your workout is something a few people are doing. I can't imagine having enough gas left in the tank to do this at the end of a workout. It's a cross-fit thing and those bastards are crazy about pushing till you puke.

  2. Yes, I also think it's mostly either/or. What does not appeal to me about these complexes is that you can't take a muscle group to proper failure for maximum inroad during the course of such a complex. Also, and this comes down to personal preference, I like the idea of going briefly to the absolute max and then stopping, and then repeating the sequence on different exercises. So I like my weight room challenges to be thorough but brief. Such an approach also builds endurance albeit indirectly and almost certainly not to the extent of these complexes. That's why I complement my lifting routine with the burst training that follows. In its present configuration, I don't think one takes away from the other.

    As for actual CrossFit, I'm really not a fan for a number of reasons that I mentioned elsewhere in this thread:

  3. I read quite a bit about cross-fit. Seems like a good way to get hurt and it happens a lot. I think the mistake is trying to do these Olympic style moves in repetition with weight that's way too heavy for multiple reps. The cross-fitters are really hung up on setting personal bests every time they go out. That's nuts.
    All that said, I do like to challenge myself every now and again and see just how much I can kick my own ass in 20 minutes. Gives me a perverse sense of accomplishment at the end of it. Kind of like, I ain't dead yet mofo's. But it certainly isn't an everyday, or even an every week kind of thing, and I use weight I can easily handle. Second or third set, that 40 pounds is getting tuff to manage. Throw in a 18lb. wall ball and 30 lb. kettle bell swing sets in the middle of it, and it's bring the pain.

  6. I read an article not all that long ago about a 1 week a month routine of superhydration and broccoli diet. That and kettle-bell swings:p would probably do the trick. Seriously, the hydration ad broccoli sounded interesting. I might give it a try.

  7. How does the broccoli factor into the equation, apart from normal dietary consumption? Something to aim the kettlebell at? :)

    Also, I was under the impression that the overhydration was a steady-state thing rather than something to do in intervals. I've been drinking more than a gallon of water daily for as long as I can remember, not as a concerted or conscious effort but just as a matter of course. But now I'm wondering if I've dropped the ball on my sodium levels, since I've also been adhering to a low-sodium diet. My concern arose after reading this article:

    So maybe the combo of lots of water and little salt may be playing it a bit too close to the wire. Although there was nothing notable in this regard according to the results from my physical last year, I think I'll bring the matter up with my doctor when I visit again in July/August. Until then, I'll be incrementally adding salt to my diet while taking my BP daily until I reach a more normal consumption level. Yesterday morning's BP was 107/73.

    Life is as complicated as we make it, eh? :D

  10. Shoes. Any opinion on the best shoes? I've read several articles and there are many choices. I'm really looking for an all around type shoe. Very limited outside the gym type stuff, but not necessarily just a shoe for lifting only. Kind of a crossfit shoe. Seems like a good old Chucks High Type Converse might be good. Right now I'm just using an old pair of New Balance running type shoe and a cheap set of Nikes.
