it wasn't that long ago I was asking the same question. I was directed to babypips and others, but nothing ever clicked until I started trading forex in my paper account. I could recommend a book called Currency Trading for Dummies on amazon which helped me quite a bit with the fundamentals of forex, like what reports to watch out for, and how rates affect exchange rates. But the very best education is to get in there with a reputable broker like ib and trade in the paper account. As a matter of fact, that's how I started trading forex and now trade it exclusively. I was losing my ass in corn and beans, but over in my paper account I was making money in forex.

no matter what it is you are interested in trading, the best place to spend time is in your paper account. I keep mine going all the time either fading what I am doing in real or tweaking one little thing I am doing in real.

If you want to spend some money for entertainment purposes then it is fine to trade forex but do not expect to make easy money in a zero-sum game controlled by market makers. You may read this for more info.

The best way to learn about the market is through demo account, it will give you a real market experience and moreover you will not risk your money.

There are plenty of regulated brokers in respected jurisdictions like UK or US
catering to retail forex traders. Why would you say it's a scam ?
