  1. still trading on an old 02' dell pentium 4 2.26ghz 40gig hd 1gb ram nvidia agp 64mb card and 2 nvidia 32mb cards - 3 monitors trade on trade station. do email and trading on this system. it stays running 24h/7. i restart each morning before mkt opens though.

I've replaced the hard drive once and power supply once. She's old, but stable and does the job still.

im trying to figure out how to do 3 monitors on the new dell i just got. pisses me off this old computer is only running 21 processes at start up , while the new dell is running around 90. How is the newer computer supposed to be faster if it's running 4.5x the processes? lol

This is a non issue. The existence of a process in the process table doesn't necessarily mean they take up 4x the resources. Some of them might be reported differently due to a different major OS version. I know that my windows 7 box runs faster than my windows server 2003 even if the latter seemed like it had less going on.

I just installed a Crucial MX200 1TB Solid State Drive and I love it. Computer boots in less than a minute when it used to take 3 to 4 minutes.

  5. Presuming your new Dell has at least 2, PCIEx16 slots... just run 2-dual port video cards... like Nvidia NVS 295/300/310/315

If your new rig has only 1, x16 slot... likely also has an x1 slot. You might find that you can run an Nvidia NVS 295 x16 card + a 295 x1 card. I say "might"... because while an x1 slot is supposed to run a video card, not all do. You'll just have to try and see.

  6. Most of the "processes" are loaded into RAM, "just in case their needed"... not actually running all the time.

My old win7 install is getting flakey, used to be weeks if not months between reboots, but does run much nicer after a restart, starting to become nearly daily here to, 90seconds tops so not the issue it once was.

  9. Linux is not guaranteed safe for any reason. About three years ago I set up a linux laptop. I set up the firewall but didn't enable it. The machine ran for 30-40 minutes connected to the internet. I started fiddling with the firewall again and found that hackerbots had changed my list of DNS's. They had added in some stuff that they could alter to pull off a man in the middle attack...
