I agree about Dell being good machines. I've always bought them, never had a problem. I liken them to Ford tractors, never going to win any prizes for looks but very solid workers.

I use them out of the box, an i5 chip and 8MB ram, works a treat but I don't number crunch etc.

And everytime over the years I've bought a custom made machine (not dell) I've had problems.

One tip for buying dell (in the UK, maybe the same in the US). They love to play tricks on their website, so the same computer they sell in retail might be cheaper if you buy it through their business channel. So TAKE YOUR TIME when ordering and expect tricks on their website, but if you do it right you'll get a great machine for a good price.

Do you happen to know if the NVS 295 can support two Crossover 27 inch monitors. The listing on eBay says it requires DVI-D links only and the memory card should have 1 gb of memory. Can the 295 handle that? If not can you recommend a video card that can and thanks for a great post.

  5. For trading and general computing including videos, the 295 can handle it even though it has either 256 or 512MB memory. For gaming, you'll want something faster.

When you say "it requires DVI-D" links, do you mean the monitor has only DVI?

The 295 has Display Ports. If your monitor has DP, just use a DP cable. If your monitor has only DVI, you'd need either a (1) DVI-DP adapter for the 295... but it supports only up to 1920x1200 resolution, or (2) a cable with DVI on one end and DP on the other.

I've never used the DVI-DP cable, so I don't know if it supports 2560x1600 res. You could call Monoprice and ask.

Cards with 2, dual-link DVI ports are not common.... Nvidia Quadro FX4600, has them.

Yea these monitors only take DVI, the FX 4600 looks like a good card but it requires a 750w power supply is that compatible with this system?

Also only DDR2 works with this system right can you post one you'd recommend.

  7. But can it run Minecraft MP Skywars at 60fps? Awesome thread, btw. I bought the last dual-cpu rig you mentioned in another thread (from ebay) as a back-up machine and it does indeed game very well. ;)

Still use my 490 and it runs great. Shout out to Winston for a great thread.

I'm in need of another desktop setup and wondering what the modern day version of this would look like or stick to these?

That's way too much of a guide, I think that some really basic PC will really do the job here, with fast enough CPU and RAM all will be fine totally. Maybe install few monitors will be totally fine here. Something Ryzen based from current one will be just good.
